If only, if only

it's always been
a serious self-inflicted
assignment

one of analyzing
the loose pieces
thrown and scattered

the puzzle of us
that seemed to fit
then no longer did

others so quickly
perfect ike a promise
we still might solve

unable to see
all that was
so evident

words might
have saved us all
empathy sits

at another table
begs to be asked
patient and true
